Biobased materials and recycled plastics solve different problems.
Biobased inputs can reduce reliance on virgin fossil feedstocks. Recycled plastics can keep existing material in use and reduce demand for new resin. Compostable materials can be useful in specific applications connected to organics collection.
The best option depends on:
- the product's function;
- contamination level;
- available recycling or composting infrastructure;
- durability requirements;
- manufacturing efficiency;
- expected disposal behavior.
I would be skeptical of anyone claiming that one material route is automatically superior in every application.
