That is why a brand should not rely on an idealized end-of-life story alone.
There are still potential reasons to redesign the material:
- renewable feedstock content;
- reduced virgin fossil material;
- lower material use through right-sizing;
- improved manufacturing efficiency;
- support for organics collection in suitable applications.
But the actual disposal pathway must be acknowledged.
A useful sustainability strategy should improve the product even when consumer behavior and infrastructure are imperfect, while continuing to build better collection and processing options.
Pretending every product will reach an ideal composting facility does not help.
