Mailers & E-commerce Packaging

Are paper mailers always better than film mailers?

Direct answer

No. The right answer depends on the product and logistics system.

No. The right answer depends on the product and logistics system.

Paper can be a good choice for rigid or moderately durable goods, but it may require more material, added coatings, or internal cushioning for moisture-sensitive products.

Flexible film mailers can be lightweight and space-efficient, especially for soft goods. Their main challenges are material sourcing and end-of-life handling.

I would compare:

  • product protection;
  • package weight;
  • empty storage volume;
  • damage rates;
  • coatings and adhesives;
  • recycled or renewable content;
  • local recovery infrastructure;
  • total material per shipment.

Replacing a lightweight mailer with a heavier package that increases damage or transport volume is not automatically an environmental improvement.
